ABOUT GILDA

The shop & gallery "Gilda" is a cooperative of ceramic artists who display their latest works within its walls, and meet their customers, students and colleagues in a direct and unmediated way.

The store was established in January 1998 by a small group of ceramicists, some of them young Israeli artists who had studied the profession in Israel, and some of them repatriates having brought the conceptual world and colorfulness of their home countries, mainly Eastern European ones.

The choice of the name "Gilda" (guild) was inspired by the celebration of 400 years to the establishment of the professional guilds in Prague. It is a historical fact that the professional unions which expressed the need for mutual support and common pride have prevented Jewish participation due to antisemitism. The Jerusalem guild of ceramicists is there to compensate for this historical injustice and raise the spirit of those practicing the craft of ceramics.

The atmosphere of joy inherent to joint work, friendship and shared responsibility among the aritsts in the group is felt by those visiting the place, and is transmitted both through the design of the interior and through the artists' works and the treatment by each artist of the works of others.

Every visit in the gallery will become a unique experience, and different from a previous visit, even a recent one, as the visitor will meet a different artist during his turn at the place, as well as encountering new works - "fresh out of the oven" - on the store's shelves.
